Electronic
Data Processing was introduced in Dhanbad
area through ICL/IBM Unit Record Machines
in several organisations in mid 1959s, which
graduated to a full fledged Computer Centre
in 1973 with installation of an ICL 1901A
computer system at PDIL, Sindri (Formerly
known as Planning & Development Division
of the Fertilizer Corporation of India). The
doors were wide open for outside users and
this resulted in expansion of Computer usage
in BIT Sindri, CFRI, ISM, CMRI, BCCL and CMPDIL,
PDIL became Institutional Member of the CSI
in 1973.
The seeds for formation of Dhanbad Chapter
of CSI were sown in 1975 by forming “Computer
User's Group” which had its meetings in PDIL,
Sindri and ISM Dhanbad.
With ISM and BCCL installing their own computers
and becoming Institutional Members, CSI membership
increased. Efforts were made in 1980 to open
a chapter of CSI but the membership strength
fell short of the required minimum number.
It took quite a few years to increase the
membership and finally the magic number of
30 was achieved in December, 1987.
A meeting of CSI Members was held on 17.3.88
in PDIL Sindri and an “Adhoc Committee for
Formation of Dhanbad Chapter of the CSI” was
formed comprising of Prof. K. K. Rao of ISM
and Sri V.C. Rai of PDIL as Convenors. Formal
request for opening the Dhanbad Chapter was
made in June 1988. The management committee
of the chapter was formed on 20.8.88 with
Prof. D. K. Sinha as Chairman and prof. K.
K. Rao as Secretary Formal approval of the
Chapter was received in Sept. 1988.
Sri K K Rao, Sri D D
Misra, Sri V C Rai & Sri S Mitra are the founder
member of CSI Dhanbad chapter and due to them only
the chapter came into the existence.
